Changing Roles in Life (29 Again)

Time goes on, different situations arise, and as those situations arise the role that we take on changes over time. It might be a large change, such as a new job, going to a new city, or a new partner. Or it might be a much smaller change, such as a new colleague at work, going to a new cafe, or making a new acquaintance.

The person that we present to others can change over time, whether it is through an intentional change or affectation, or whether it is through an unconscious change from a recent lesson learned or experience. When we meet somebody new we can choose to focus on one of our characteristics or another. We can choose to focus on being more generous, patient, and kind.

Recently some of us at @happyops have gone through a period of change, brought about by hitting a birthday that ends in ‘0’. Let us not speak the number that comes before it, but instead speak about the changes that have occurred within us.

This is more of mind shift to being a full adult, that encompasses happiness in our lives and success at work, but also being a positive role model for children and others younger than ourselves. This includes:

  • Being lighthearted and welcoming to people approaching us.
  • Willing to share our knowledge and experience with others.
  • Taking the time to be patient with others.

This sentiment calls to mind the following verse from Corinthians in the Bible:

When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.
