You will have no doubt come across some variant of this quote from Alexander Graham Bell:
When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.– Alexander Graham Bell
The quote refers to how the causes and conditions for a given situation to arise, sustain for a period of time. Those situations presented us with given opportunities – whether they were for work, relationships, or some other door that was open to us.
Eventually the causes and conditions for the situation to arise will dissipate and the situation will fall away into the past. But the causes and conditions for another situation to arise, that will present us with other opportunities.
Alexander Graham Bell is pointing out that all too often we are attached to the previous situation and the opportunities that it presented. After all hindsight is perfect. We fail to recognise the opportunities that are currently available to us right now in the present moment and to benefit from those opportunities.
As mentioned, a given situation arises based on causes and conditions. The causes and conditions for joyful and happy situations are those positive actions that benefit other people or animals. The causes and conditions for difficulties and troublesome situations are those those negative actions that harm other people or animals mentally (ie. psychologically) or physically. In other words, we are the master of our own destiny, we decide whether we will experience happiness or suffering tomorrow based on the actions that we perform today.
At @happyops we encourage you to live in the now and recognise the opportunities that are available to us right now to benefit both ourselves and others.
