Emptiness of Stuff (Phenomenon)

Notes from a talk by Geshe Wangchen on November 27, 2015.

1. The stuff / basis, eg. table.
2. The own emptiness of, eg. merely labeled table.
Lack of inherently existing table.
This cannot be established apart from the table.
3. Emptiness of that emptiness.

There is a table that is composed of a collection of parts that we label “table”.
There is no “table” by itself that is separate from those parts.
The table is arising in depending on the gathering of those parts.

Lama Tsongkhapa said that without stuff then we cannot posit it’s emptiness. Only with stuff can we posit it’s emptiness.
This indicates the dependency between stuff and it’s emptiness.
In the Heart Sutra it says
1. Form is empty.
2. Emptiness is form.
3. Emptiness is not other than form. Form is also not other than emptiness.

1. Form is empty.
Form does not exist by itself. It is not self-established.

2. Emptiness is form.
The lack of the self-existence of the form is the emptiness of the form. Form is empty of being self-established. Form is not self-established.

3. Emptiness is not other than form. Form is also not other than emptiness.
This refers to how the same basis has two separate isolates, (a) the form and (b) the emptiness.
