Unfortunately we have to put the hard yards in or hard yakka in, and actually develop our minds. You may call this spiritual development, internal training, or religious practice, but I will just call it mind training. This might be through reflection during the day, formal meditation, chanting, or other practices that are being used to train the mind.
Normally I put in the hard yards in to external activities. The main external activity is work. The amount of happiness that work itself will give is incredibly limited. The money that I get from work is very useful and that money allows to buy a great deal, including food and rent. So I should appreciate what work gives me, but be careful not to overemphasise what happiness work brings.
